Your AirPods suddenly can’t connect to iPhone or Mac? Solve the problem with these six simple steps.

Airpods are also so popular and successful because they are recognized particularly reliably by iPhones and Macs thanks to an Apple chip. But if there are problems with this connection and the Airpods are not recognized, you can usually solve this with these six steps – often with one of the first.

How to fix Airpods connection problems:

Which system: For the Airpods 3 you need iOS 15.1 or macOS 12! Airpods Pro also works with iOS 13.2 and macOS 10.15.1, the old Airpods 2 with iOS 12.2 and macOS 10.14.

Is Bluetooth active: On the iPhone, select Settings > Bluetooth and check whether it says “On”. On the Mac, go to the “Bluetooth” system preferences.

Check batteries: Insert the two Airpods into the charging case and note the status indicator, which now lights up for eight seconds. Yellow means the devices are charging, green means the devices are charged. With the newer cases, the display is on the front, with the old devices inside the case between the two slots

Check if Airpods is the audio output device: Open the control center and tap the media player item at the top right. All audio output devices are listed here. Maybe your Homepod is selected.

Reconnect: Close the cover of the charging case with Airpods in it for 15 seconds. Then open the lid again. Now press the setup button on the back of the charging case for 10 seconds. The indicator should now be blinking white.

Now open the charging case and hold it close to your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Mac. A window should now appear and it should be possible to establish a connection.

Reset: If that didn’t help, you can reset the Airpods. To do this, place them in the charging case and close the lid. Now wait thirty seconds. Then open the lid again.

On your iPad or iPhone, go to the “Bluetooth” setting and find your Airpods in the device list. Next to the devices, you will see a small I symbol. Tap on this symbol and a subpage will open. Tap on “Forget This Device”.

Back to the charging case: keep the lid open and press the setup button on the back for 15 seconds. The indicator should then blink amber and then white.
